William Giles
William Giles joined MasterCard Worldwide in October 2005 as Vice President – Advanced Payments, Chip Centre of Excellence. In this role, he was responsible for supporting MasterCard Canada’s strategic migration to chip technology. While at MasterCard, he also led the Acceptance Team for three years and is now the Emerging Payments Lead for Canada Region.
After obtaining a degree at the University of Western Ontario, William Giles worked for the Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) and became Assistant Marketing Manager in 1991. He was, among other things, responsible for managing the successful development, marketing and promotion of Personal Access Banking products including the launch of TD’s Interac Debit product.
With William’s product development and strategy skills, and an aptitude for new and changing technology, Bell Canada recruited him as Associate Director - Business Development in the Advanced Card Applications team. There, as part of a team, he developed Bell Canada’s Smart Card strategy.
In 1998, William joined RBC - Royal Bank of Canada where he managed their Commercial Card product and lead the development of Mortgage, Loan and GIC transactions within Online Banking for two years until he was asked to lead RBC’s Smart Card initiative.
In his role as Senior Manager - eCommerce-Smart Card & Authentication and later as Director - Emerging Technologies, William developed the RBC Chip Migration strategy, influenced the industry migration and represented Canada as an EMV Board Advisor. During his time at RBC, he also gained insight into the acquiring business through a secondment to Moneris Solutions where he put in place the foundation for their Chip Migration program. William has displayed a passion for technology and presented his vision for the future of payments, internationally, with speaking engagements at Cartes and CardTech/ SecurTech.
